Admissions to International Classes
Admission to the international classes at Miina Härma Gümnaasium is regulated by the administrative contract between the Ministry of Education and Research and the Tartu City Government (2021-2024), which clearly states the target group for admission. The language of instruction for international students is English, and the students are expected to be able to understand, communicate, and study in this language.
Admission for the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programme classes is open for:
- The children of diplomatic embassies, consulate employees, and the representatives of international organizations*.
- The children of specialists from foreign countries who come to work in the public sector under the objectives of the Estonian National Action Plan (including lecturers who work for the universities in Tartu and international students who are doing their PhD as well as the employees of the defence sector)*.
- The children of Estonian citizens who are working in a diplomatic position in Estonia or abroad and have previously studied at one of the IB World Schools or in another international school in a foreign country because of their parents’ occupation and have their employer’s written confirmation about the contract*.
- Upon availability of vacant study places, the children of top specialists from foreign countries working for international private companies operating in priority areas for the City of Tartu who are temporarily in Tartu due to a work contract.*
*The parent must submit a written confirmation letter from the institution to prove they comply with the target group requirements.
All IB PYP and MYP applicants are admitted based on the applications filled out by the parent or legal guardian. The application form can be downloaded below and must be sent to the appropriate IB coordinator alongside copies of the required documents (marked with X on the form).
All IB PYP and MYP students are divided into classes primarily based on their age and then considering their prior educational level. When necessary, interviews or tests are conducted to determine the student’s subject-specific knowledge and/or level of English.
Students applying for a study place at IB PYP and MYP must have a level of English that enables them to communicate with others and participate actively in the learning process.
Application form for PYP and MYP
Admission to the international Pre-IB class is open to students who classify under regulations set forth by the administrative contract:
- The children of diplomatic embassies, consulate employees, and the representatives of international organizations*.
- The children of specialists from foreign countries who come to work in the public sector under the objectives of the Estonian National Action Plan (including lecturers who work for the universities in Tartu and international students who are doing their PhD as well as the employees of the defence sector)*.
- The children of Estonian citizens who are working in a diplomatic position in Estonia or abroad and have previously studied at one of the IB World Schools or in another international school in a foreign country because of their parents’ occupation and have their employer’s written confirmation about the contract*.
- Upon availability of vacant study places, the children of top specialists from foreign countries working for international private companies operating in priority areas for the City of Tartu who are temporarily in Tartu due to a work contract.*
*The parent must submit a written confirmation letter from the institution to prove they comply with the target group requirements.
All applicants for the Pre-IB class must complete and present the application form to the IB DP Coordinator (School application MHG) with copies of the required documents (marked with X on the form).
When the applicant is not a native English speaker, their level of English is assessed before admission. For this, the applicant must write an essay on the given topic and participate in the interview conducted in English.
Admission to the DP is open to students who classify under regulations set forth by the administrative contract:
- The children of the employees of diplomatic embassies and consulates and the representatives of international organisations*.
- The children of specialists from foreign countries who come to work in the public sector under the objectives of the Estonian National Action Plan (including lecturers who work for the universities in Tartu and international students who are doing their PhD as well as the employees of the defence sector)*.
- The children of the citizens of Estonia who are working in a diplomatic position in Estonia or abroad and have been previously studying at one of the IB World Schools or in another international school in a foreign country because of their parent’s occupation and have their employer’s written confirmation about the contract*.
- Students who have graduated from the Pre-IB class at Miina Härma Gümnaasium
- Upon availability of vacant study places, students who have graduated from 10th grade in Estonia.
- Upon availability of vacant study places, the children of top specialists from foreign countries working for international private companies operating in priority areas for the City of Tartu who are temporarily in Tartu due to a work contract.*
*The parent must submit a written confirmation letter from the institution to prove they comply with the target group requirements.
All IB DP candidates must complete and submit an application document (Application to the IB Diploma Programme) to the IB DP Coordinator and receive letters of recommendation from three teachers of different subject areas (science, humanities/social sciences, mathematics). When the applicant is not a native English speaker, their level of English is assessed. The applicants must write an essay in English on a given topic. All students will take part in an entrance interview.
A student selection committee (IB DP Coordinator and one teacher from each subject group) will be set up.
The ranking of students applying for the 11DP class is based on the teachers’ recommendations, the average grade of the 10th grade, the entrance interview and the essay results.
The application document with subject choices must be submitted by 1st May of the previous academic year.
Notification of admission to the 11DP class is sent to the students within one month by email.
Upon availability of vacant study places, students who have completed 11DP in another school are eligible to apply, provided they present an official certificate proving their previous studies.
To accept the study place, the applicant or their legal guardian must present the following documents:
- Pre-IB or grade 10 report card;
- IB DP application form with all required documents listed in the application form;
- A digital document photo for the student card (min 600×800 pix)

Important to know
* Children applying for Grade 1 need to be at least 6 (but preferably 7) years old before the beginning of the school year.
* The parent applying for the study place needs to fit under the admission criteria and be able to prove it with the official confirmation letter.
