IB Middle Years Programme at MHG
Miina Härma Gümnaasium is using the accredited IB Middle Years Programme ( MYP) framework in developing and implementing its curriculum. The MYP is an intellectually demanding programme that encourages students to make practical connections between what they learn at school and the real world. The programme empowers students to inquire about a wide range of concepts that are important both locally and on a global scale. Theses concepts are divided into universal key concepts and subject specific related concepts that are all brought together under the framework of six global concepts.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) includes eight subject groups:
- Language and literature
- Language acquisition
- Individuals and societies
- Sciences
- Mathematics
- Arts
- Physical and health education
- Design
The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group in each year of the programme. Each year, students in the MYP also engage in at least one collaboratively planned interdisciplinary unit that involves at least two subject groups.
MYP students in year 5 (grade 9) are required to complete a Personal project in their field of personal interest demonstrating their knowledge and skills from their previous years of study. For further information see The Personal project handbook and timeline. (ei ole veel faile, tulevad hiljem)
Assessment
Assessment in the MYP is integral to all teaching and learning supporting student learning. In concurrence with the MYP assessment guidelines teachers assess using the prescribed subject-group objectives and assessment criteria for each subject group in each year of the programme and students are assessed using both formative and summative assessment tasks.
Subject groups must assess all strands of all four assessment criteria at least twice in each year of the MYP. IBO provides the required assessment criteria for years 1, 3 and 5 of the MYP. Miina Härma Gümnaasium has decided that MYP teachers make decisions about students’ achievement using their professional judgment and the “best-fit” approach, based on the assessment criteria that are public, known in advance and precise (MYP Assessment Criteria are discussed with students at the start of each study unit), ensuring that assessment is transparent.
